At one point, an official told Ferrer he had read some of his writing on the Modern School. A junior military officer, given less than a day to review Ferrer's brief, served as defense. The prosecution, said William Archer - a pro-Ferrer British journalist who wrote about the teacher's death for McClure's - failed to call any witnesses. Eight years later, he found himself accused of sedition. Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, an anarchist, had opened a progressive grade school in Barcelona with the goal of cultivating free thinkers. Two years earlier, in a trench outside a fort in Catalonia, Spanish monarchists executed the founder of the first Modern School. While the children of the day school took their lessons and played in a nearby park, they waited, hidden, to see if something would turn up. So the cops staked out the Modern School, their best and most concrete lead. The four plotters, other anarchists readily admitted, had recently attended lectures at the school. The administrators of the day school claimed to know nothing about the bomb. The Ferrer Center had an adult education program, yes, but it also taught grade-school age children. What in the world was going on at that school?Īssociates of the Ferrer Center swore over and over that the school had had nothing to do with the attack. All four had attended courses at the Ferrer Center, an alternative school in Harlem, as part of its adult education program. The police, who had a history of clashes with the I.W.W., kicked off their investigation by interrogating Berkman and Berger, who claimed not to know anything about the plot.Īs police sifted through the evidence, they noticed a link between the dead radicals. agitators and their women sympathizers were killed as a result of the explosion seems little short of miraculous in view of the extent of the ruin wrought by the dynamite," wrote the Times reporter. She didn't get much sympathy from the press. Now she stood next to Berkman and her colleagues, gazing up at her demolished home. A member of the Anarchist Red Cross and an editor of Emma Goldman's Mother Earth Bulletin, Berger had lent the five anarchists her apartment while they built their bomb. The bomb peeled the top two floors off the building, exposing to a crowd of onlookers what remained of the apartment of Louise Berger. He was on holiday in Maine.īerkman and other members of the anarchist community raced uptown to see what had happened. Rockefeller had not even been in his Tarrytown, NY, house. This time, obviously, the attempted murder - if it really was an attempted murder - had failed even more profoundly. But Frick lived, and Berkman spent 14 years in jail. In 1892, during a labor dispute in Pittsburgh, Berkman had shot the industrialist Henry Clay Frick, and then stabbed him with a steel file. leader (and dandy) who was based in the city. This man from out of town, whose name turned out to be Mike Murphy, went straight to the office of Alexander Berkman, an anarchist and I.W.W. Policemen, who clashed frequently with members of the Industrial Workers of the World and suspected them already in the blast, didn't recognize him. Dazed, he wandered out of the building and down the street. At 9:17, he was not in the apartment with them they were dead, and the blast had blown him and the bed he was lying in two floors down, from the top floor to the fifth floor of the new-model tenement. Instead, four students had killed themselves accidentally.Īt 9:16 that morning, a fifth man had been in the apartment with them. Official sources reported that the bomb had been meant for John D. On July 4, 1914, anarchists from the Modern School in New York set off a bomb in a Lexington Avenue apartment building. Stories varied. The former aided Ty Dolla $ign in forming his signature, slow and melodic iteration of West Coast R&B in his early career here, the pair’s synergy is evident once more, Ty’s husky runs wedded to the plight of African Americans’ struggles. Who knew that a spin-off lawyer drama could be this astoundingly enjoyable? Assuming that the conclusions I'm jumping to are accurate, them season three is going to be even better than one or two. Without a single frame of footage or story hitting the net, the third season of 'Better Call Saul' has already poised itself for greatness. We may all have our own guesses as to what it means, but if I'm connecting the dots correctly, then we're about to see a whole lot more of 'Bad' become a front-and-center element in 'Saul.' In a very fun way, small connections are made with more elements from 'Breaking Bad.' Mike's season two tale ends with a bit of a puzzling cliffhanger. Tuco's untrustworthy henchman Nacho makes some unpredictable moves that ultimately place Mike smack-dab in the middle of danger – and we're not just talking about one dangerous moment, but a scenario that's just as twisted and screwy as any of the corners that 'Breaking Bad' painted itself into. Mike's story turns out to be quite a thrilling one in season two. Despite that, it's just as strong as the non-Jimmy content that delivers intensity. There's plenty of tension in this season, but little of it stems from Jimmy's central tale. Once again, through all of the slow-rising character drama, it's absolutely gripping. We watch Jimmy give Chuck the proverbial finger. We learn why Chuck resents Jimmy so much. Their individual careers have ups and downs. The season progresses with the ups and downs of the Jimmy-Kim romance. Heeding Kim's advice, he takes a high-paying position with a reputable firm outside of town. It looked like we were heading into in a direction that would show Jimmy do his own thing and immediately walk down the path that leads to Saul, but we instead follow him into the submissive world of high-end law. The relationship with Jimmy is likely going to be her demise.įollowing the first episode, the season quickly deviates from where you might have thought it was going. He's a good man we want to see him succeed - but considering Kim Wexler is nowhere to be found in 'Breaking Bad,' we know this is going to end badly for her. As a viewer, we know where Jimmy is headed, so seeing him negatively influence Kim is bittersweet. To this point, Kim has been genuinely driven by integrity. The two scam a yuppie stock broker and have a wonderful evening that ultimately ends up with the two sleeping together. When she realizes his poolside con, she curiously explores just what he's capable of and ultimately gets caught up in the game. While lounging at the pool and charging his drinks and meals to an unknown person's room, Kim stops by to talk some sense into him. After closing up shop, he heads to a high-end hotel and starts conning again. The down-and-out depressed Jimmy from the season one finale carries into the season two opener, but by revealing his true colors, he makes progress in one way that he was previously unable to. On page, there's absolutely nothing about 'Saul' that signals it as one of the best currently-running television series – but proving its greatness is the fact that day-after-airing watercooler conversations are just as common for 'Saul' as they are for wildly popular series like ' The Walking Dead.' Just as the second season of ' Fargo' managed to, the second season of 'Better Call Saul' is even stronger than the first. The flawless ten-episode first season ends with us finally seeing Jimmy take his first step towards consciouslly becoming Saul. After the death of his best friend and losing a gem-of-a-case, one that is destined to become a class action lawsuit, alongside Mike Ehrmantraut, he vows to stop helping others and selfishly only do what's best for him. Constantly attempting to impress his hypochondriac brother and win the affection from his up-and-coming laywer friend Kim, he's not yet the out-for-himself truth-bender Saul Goodman. Instead, he's broken and unsuccessful James "Jimmy" McGill. Previously on ' Better Call Saul': our antihero, the shady lawyer from ' Breaking Bad,' has not yet become the successful and crooked lawyer that we love and adore. It quickly overfilled and became the concentration camp.
